History:

The zoo Chemnitz with the corresponding wild-animal-park Oberrabenstein attracts over 200,000 visitors from near and far. But todays attempt in the Triangle Siegmar / Reichenbrand / Rabenstein located near the Pelzmühle Park is not the first, to establish a zoo in Chemnitz , and get a piece of exotic nature to the front door . As in other large cities, it was first an enterprising restaurateur at the beginning of the 20th Century on the Blank Straße who showed a number of animals in enclosures. But this facility survived only a few years. A second and quite spectacular atempt was made in 1924 to 1930. Under the name " branch of the Leipzig Zoo in Chemnitz " and later " Zoologischer Garten Chemnitz " were during the summer months, between the Central Station and Theaterstraße various animals from the Leipzig Zoo, among others, giraffes, lions , ostriches, a chimpanzee , a rhinoceros, antelopes, sea lions, bears and even a sloth. Throug this, the Chemnitz people in financially difficult times even without traveling to Dresden or Leipzig had the option to visit a zoo. Special attention at that time got a female elephant with calf and an orangutan Family. During the war years, there were at the restaurant Pelzmühle the so-called monkey pavilion with living animals. Starting with a group of rhesus macaques in the 1960s then became the foundation for today's zoo. In a small and swampy forest near the Pelzmühlenteich a first zoo for german animals was built. The opening was held in June 1964 and it was mainly pets and native species, but also some monkeys. In the following years the number of livestock and animal species increased, and there was a brisk stream of visitors recorded . Since 1975 the zoo began to change the range of species and to specialize in the wildlife of the former Soviet Union. For example Kulans and Siberian tigers came in the 1990s. The zoo was then transformed into a conservation zoo. The mode selection is now mainly focused on endangered species from several continents. The area of the zoo grew, enclosures were rebuilt, created generous open spaces and built new facilities . Moreover, since 1995, the Wild Animal Park is part of the zoo, in which only European animals live. In 1993, the zoo Chemnitz from the Natural History Museum Schleusingen got an extensive collection of amphibians. To accommodate these effectively and humanely, the former horse stables were converted and then opened in 1996 as Europe's unique vivarium for amphibians. Furthermore, a parrot house and pheasantry with a cold and warm house, Zebra and Somali wild ass enclosure with heated stables, an enclosure for tropical bears, the porcupine enclosure, two continent -related community facilities (showing animals from Australia and South America), the petting zoo in the style of a Ore Mountains farm , the marmosets house and two expansions for the big cats cages and the lion enclosure were added . The flamingo lawn, the duck pond and the stockyards were rebuilt or renovated. Modern toilet facilities were created, a new ticket office built, the road network secured and parking lot created. To better meet the missions of education and upbringing awarness responsibilitie for nature in 1998 the zoo school was completed . The largest project of the zoo was the conversion of a factory building into a tropical house, which since 2002 for the Chemnitz and their guests is an exotic oasis in the big city.Der zoo is working on various conservation projects, participates in over 25 conservation breeding programs and international studbooks for threatened species and makes its visitors aware of conservation issues .

Even before we are at the entrance, we see ass, one of the oldest domestic animals in general. After we paid the entrance fee , we can already see the enclosure for Katanga lions. Turning right then comes a pampas enclosure with animals such as the rhea and the alpaca. We have a farm behind from the Ore mountains with animals such as rats and pigs. The next house has Europe's largest number of species of amphibians, 70 species! Here we find species as the Chinese giant salamander and the flat tail Cayenne caecilian. Past the flamingos we see a savanna enclosure with zebras and ostriches next to a duck pond. Passing a creek we have to the right Prezewalski's horse andto the left an Australia enclosure with kangaroos. Opposite we have a house for marmosets and behind a house for Parots. Then we already can see the pheasantry and a enclosure for porcupines. Now we meet the sloth bear and the tropical house with pygmy hippos and many free-roaming animals such as the sloth. Let us turn back passing the marmosets, we soon after see the facilities for leopards and Amur tigers. In this corner we have the aviary for birds of prey. On the left we see then aviaries for small cats, such as African wildcats ( the ancestor of all domestic breeds ). The zoo also maintains the rarely shown Carpathian lynx, which can be seen in the wild animal park. Back on the main road we see the funny coatis and stump-tailed macaque. Turning right passing the mountain goats we have to right an enclosure for arctic foxes . Now we have arrived at the ungulates enclosures, where we start with the Kulan, a Onager subspecies. They share their habitat with the bactrian camels that live opposite. In addition, the Somali wild ass then lives in Africa. Then come the Anoas and the Visayan spotted deer, both types are almost to extinction and it is probably attributable to the zoo there still are Visayan spotted deer. Almost as rare are the Persian fallow deer from Iran. The last enclosure is inhabited by West Caucasian tur.
